Nice features and performance - BUT support is bad
By scott
Before I begin, I must mention that I do like the product, but the customer support is bad. The real test of an AV
is not just being able to do its job, but how good the customer support is that comes with it, especially when
malware does not leave the system. In my case, I hardly received any help from them. Finally, I ended up solving my
problem myself. Customer services is of NO help. Just format your hard drive and reinstall everything. But that process
is not as easy as it might sound.
I don't think I will buy this product again. I think I will just take regular backups of my system and run everything in
a sandbox such as sandboxie (free !).
Notes -
1 - The picture here is of Kaspersky Pure and not KIS 2013. KIS was printed on my box, but not 2013.
Its actually the 2013 version.
2 - Search for a downloadable version instead of the box version.
The software in the box is already outdated. So, the setup CD will automatically download a new
version of 160Mb (This is an application update and NOT the signature update). If you end up
downloading anyway, then why pay for a physical copy ? The download might be cheaper, just look
around in Google.
3 - For a 30 day trial copy of KIS 2013, go to their website and download. Then buy.
I cannot do a professional review on KIS, so here is a quick one. You can go to AV
comparatives or similar websites for more tests. To read more about the features,
go to Kaspersky website.
Good -
1 - Virtual Keyboard, VK with anti screen grabber (Unique feature)
You can type all your passwords using this on-screen keyboard. It can save you from key-loggers and screen-grabbers (an advanced "key logger").
Try using your windows 7 snipping tool when the VK is on screen. You wont capture a thing.
Bad news - I already know a commercial software that can defeat this feature. So, the bad guys can't be too far behind.
Firefox (FF) releases updates so frequently that KIS cannot make a compatible version of VK for each update. As a result, FF
users might not have a VK for sometime. This problem did not happen with Google Chrome. So, use KIS with chrome when you want to use
the VK.
2 - Safe Money
Run websites, especially ones like e-bay, banks, Facebook etc. in a protected/isolated browser.
3 - User interface
It is very simple and mostly intuitive.
4 - Does not slow MY system down with safety at medium level. Slows the system and browser a bit in High security mode.
Other features are more or less the same as other AV's - URL Scanner, File reputation checker, Cloud protection etc.
Bad -
- No sandbox for all programs. So, you need sandboxie or similar software
- Updates are slow, 30Mb took about 10 minutes.
- Tech support does help, but you have to be persistent. If you feel that there may still be malware in your system
despite doing all the necessary things (regular updates, full scans at max settings etc), then they tell you to
download and run their tool called "ReportMaker" and send them reports generated. If you have a nasty malware which
still manages to bypass all these measures, then you are on your own. The customer service people will insist that
everything is okay. Kaspersky engineers, like the ones from other companies, write articles about how some malware
are nearly impossible to detect, let alone fix. But, it looks like their customer service people don't seem to be
aware of these possibilities.
Other Comments -
- No antivirus/AV is perfect. They can be easily defeated even when they are fully updated. Search the word - crypter on Google :)
- Don't expect miracles if your system is already infected and you install KIS after that.
- Go to settings and put a password which will prevent KIS settings from being changed or uninstalled. A lot of malware do these
things and password protection can help against that.
- Some other tools you may use along with KIS to improve security - Firefox browser with NoScript plugin installed.
NoScript "allows JavaScript, Java, Flash and other plugins to be executed only by trusted web sites of your choice"
Its not too difficult to use. See the video link for a tutorial on its website.
- Sandboxie for running software or even surfing websites which you do not know about. Read the official page and wikipedia page, especially Windows 64 bit users.
Btw, some crypters can also provide anti-sandboxing features. But, its better to have a sandbox.
Extra notes -
I don't want to sound alarmist, but its good to know how nasty and dangerous some malware can be. Here are some examples which I feel are worth mentioning -
Stuxnet - To attack nuclear facilities, specifically cripple centrifuges used in Iran's nuclear program - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuxnet
Zeus - Steals online banking information - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeus_%28Trojan_horse%29
KoobFace - Targets users of social media websites like Facebook - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koobface
Mebromi - Attacks the BIOS. So, it can survive a full hard disk format or replacement. http://www.webroot.com/blog/2011/09/13/mebromi-the-first-bios-rootkit-in-the-wild/

Slowed down my computer & caused other problems
By Corwin
I downloaded the 30 day trial of this from Kaspersky to try it & see if it was really as good as it sounded & as good as I thought that it would be. After & downloaded & installed it, it was starting to effect my overall computer speed & slow it down quite a bit. On the 3rd day of having this installed on my PC, I had downloaded a trusted download file & saved it to the (Downloads Folder) in Windows 7. When I went to open that downloaded file, everything in that folder was frozen & I could not do anything on my computer after that nor could I even close that specific folder. I even launched Windows Task Manager to stop whatever Kaspersky had made go wrong with that folder & to try in force close that folder since it would not let me close it when it was frozen. I still had no luck. I never had any problems with that folder or opening anything in that folder until I installed Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 on my computer. I finally had to just press the reset button on my computer & make my PC reboot. Once it was rebooted, Windows 7 took considerably longer to start & fully load than when I did not have Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 on my computer.
Another pet peeve that I was having was that Kaspersky was really slow at downloading their definition updates & took a really long time. They were not sending through their definition updates for automatic downloads efficiently when I started up my PC with an instant Broadband Internet connection that is always on. I would be connected to the Internet for 15 to 20 minutes & watching closely to see if their product was downloading & installing definition updates automatically like it's supposed to. After 20 minutes & still no definition updates downloaded, I went in & manually told Kaspersky Internet Security to search for & install definition updates. Sure enough, there were definition updates available that were not being downloaded & installed efficiently or automatically for up to date security protection. Most good security products out on the market today will check & download security definition updates quickly & right as soon as there is an Internet Connection detected by the security product. Even Avast Free Antivirus checks, downloads & installs security definition updates as soon as their product detects an Internet connection & way faster that Kaspersky products do or can. Sad that is being that Kaspersky is not free & costs money every year but Avast free antivirus is in fact free & downloads their definition updates very speedily when connected to the Internet unlike Kaspersky products.
Therefore, I decided that after the many dis-satisfactions of having Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 installed on my computer for only 3 days, that it wasn't the security product that I wanted or expected it to be. There were the problems with it that I ran into & experienced after I installed it that were not good turn outs for me to want to purchase a whole years worth of this product to protect my PC. (:-(
If you are going to or are considering purchasing a Kaspersky Security Product, I would advise that you do as I did & download a free 30 day trial & then decide for yourself before purchasing it. I'm just glad that I only installed the 30 day free trial from Kaspersky. I did not like the product & am not out the dollars thanks to the free 30 day trial that Kaspersky offers to us who are interested in their products.

Terrible Cusomer Service, period!
By cgtennis
Terrible experience when I tried to activate my license. There is no customer service contact number for you to call. You have to create a ticket from the web and they only respond to your emails. Although my purchase came with a sealed package, customer Service is unable to activate the license saying my license is illegal. That's crazy.
