We switched our computer back to Norton I believe in 2010, after Norton started receiving good reviews again. The software was, in fact, much improved.
A few weeks ago our office computers updated themselves to the newest edition of Norton Antivirus, I believe it was 2013. I cannot check it now because I had to uninstall the software on some machines and I have no access to the others to check.
This new edition does not seem to recognize when the computer is busy. The message saying that the computer is idle and Norton will scan files comes up and that is it, you cannot do anything productive anymore. A quad core machine with 4 GB of ram comes to a crawl.
Again, nothing like that was happening before the big update.
Uninstalled norton, back to Security Essentials and now I am able to work again. I gave norton a shot, it worked fine for about two years but now I would not recommend it.
EDIT: One week Norton free. I cannot believe how more responsive my computer has become. No more crashes, no more waiting until pdf or word document opens up. The difference is dramatic. Also, the HDD control light on my computer is off most of the time. With Norton, it was almost constantly blinking.
What a difference this uninstall has made. I am lowering the score to one star.

Says that it's Antivirus and protects 3 computers. I downloaded it and it's simply a trial. It doesn't do a damn thing. Then I go to Norton and create an account and they show that this software is only for 1 computer! Another kick in the nuts. What a bunch of BS. Really!

This warning may seem obvious, but once you've downloaded and installed the program, and if you have an earlier version installed, you will still received notices that the program is expiring. You have to enter the activation code in order to eliminate the expiration and to have the full year you've paid for. Again, it's painfully obvious, but if this reasonably computer-savvy college graduate with 30+ years of hands-on business experience could miss that wrinkle, perhaps others will too. Buy it, install it, remember to enter the activation code, and enjoy anti-virus security.
