5Kaspersky Internet Security - The best there is.
By TJ14
UPDATE:

Ok wow. I have no connection with Kaspersky whatsover. Just a regular longtime amazon user who writes many reviews, some of which are very positive if I like the product a lot.

XXXXXXXXXXX----XXXXXXXXXXXX

Kaspersky Internet Security (K.I.S) has yet again proved itself as a dominant player in the security market with its 2013 version. Almost any internet security comes with a 2 way Firewall, anti-spam and anti-identity theft tools. Tools which are not usually included in the anti-virus suites of any company. Hence I always suggest people to buy Internet Security suites and not just the anti-virus, regardless of the security company in question. Anyway, here are some points as to why I like KIS

1) Often security softwares tend to be unnecessarily complicated, causing the users to not use most of the features that the software comes with. Thankfully, Kaspersky has a user friendly interface which is usable to people of almost any technical level. The software notifies you in a very non-obtrusive way when a potential threat is detected. Different features in the software such as Network monitoring, handling quarantine, scanning, updating, etc. is very easy.

2) The drawback of having any anti-virus program is that it bogs down your processor and ram, and seems intrusive in most actions you might take. KIS on the other hand is very light on the system, using under 5mb of ram in the background, which is astoundingly low.

3) I have used many paid and free internet security solutions out there. McAfee, Norton, AVG amongst others. And time and again I see that KIS is the most successful in blocking worms, trojans and viruses. Quite savvy with technology, I very rarely present myself to a vulnerable situation. But even then, my computer does come in contact with infected files somehow or the other (flash drives usually). But KIS has kept me safe every single file.

4) Safe Money - This is one of the killer features of Kaspersky. I use online commerce and banking services alot. Hence that makes me paranoid about wanting to stay protected. And KIS has helped me easy that paranoia to a large extent with this feature. Despite encryption and other means, commerce online is still faced with vulnerabilities in the network and browser. So when you visit the login page of the desired commerce website (like ebay, paypal or your bank website) KIS opens a new protected instance of your browser, and checks the URL and certificate of the website. This is especially important as scammers often use legitimate looking spoofs of websites and grab hold of the customer's info once they enter it (this is called phishing. This is a great feature!

5) Finally KIS installs nifty little things like a virtual keyboard and anti spam banner on your browsers. These again help thwart spurious websites and keyloggers.

6) KIS also comes with highly customizable parental control features, which help protect and control the computer use of your child.

All in all I LOVE Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 and would recommend to anyone to keep their computers safe and protected in a usable and efficient manner. Remember, better safe than sorry.

3Strong Pluses and Minuses
By Douglas W. Middleton
First of all the price on this 3 PC pack is substantially lower elsewhere so shop around. I found assigning stars to this product to be difficult. My son's computer could no longer open web sites at all even with all the browser ad-ons turned off.I had to uninstall Kaspersky on his computer and he could instantly open web sites again. The Safe Money tool was too buggy to use so I turned most of the browser features off on my PC. My wife's PC barely ran before I installed Kaspersky. She had Norton's 360 installed and it had never found any problems. Kaspersky found multiple ad-wares, trojans and viruses. Her PC runs like new now that the threats have been removed. Kaspersy sometimes borders on overkill for security but does a great job eliminating threats. I think it is a great product but you may have to turn off most of the browser add-ons to use the internet.

4Comparison versus McAfee All Access and Norton 360
By mhnstr
I had the opportunity to try and to compare three different internet security suites including Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 (KIS), Norton 360 2013 - 1 User / 3 PC [Download] and McAfee All Access Individual 2013. Technology websites such as PC Magazine or CNET spend a lot of time testing the effectiveness of internet security suites at finding and disabling malware and viruses and the effectiveness of firewalls at repelling attacks. Therefore these websites are better at reviewing the actual effectiveness of the software than my experience with my own computers. However, the user experience is an important part of the software. What good is a very good internet security package if it slows your computer to a crawl or isnt easy to use? So it is the user experience of the three internet security suites that I am comparing.

All three of the internet security suites allow you to try the software on your own machine before buying and it is probably a good idea to do this before buying so that you can see how the security suite affects your own computer and if you like the interface. Just go to the software manufactures website and click on the download option to get the trial version. Once you decide, you can order the software from Amazon (generally less expensive than purchasing directly) and then enter the product key that comes with your software delivered from Amazon to convert the trial version into a year long license.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 (KIS) is developed by Kaspersky Labs which is based in Moscow. PC Magazine gave KIS 2013 the following scores: Firewall 4.5/5, Virus 4/5 virus blocking 3.5/5 Performance 3.5/5. Overall KIS was rated by PC Magazine as being excellent. However, Norton 360 was ranked higher in each category and was the Editor's Choice as the best internet security suite.

KIS includes virus protection, a firewall, phishing and spam protection and Safe Money which protects your financial transactions. I found the Safe Money to be a really good idea. You enter the secure website of your financial intuitions from which you log into your account. Safe Money will not accept a website which is not secure. Once the site has been set, you click on a link in Safe Money to connect to the financial institution and Safe Money launches an independent browser window for you to conduct your transaction. Security professionals recommend that you use a different browser to access your online banks than the one that you use for general browsing. Although you could do the same as Safe Money yourself, just using Money is a good reminder to only access the banks through the secure websites and not using the same browsing session as you use to surf the web.

KIS has a feature called the Vulnerability Scan which investigates the software installed on your computer to determine if you have the latest version installed. This is not part of the standard scan, but needs to be run separately. Running the scan has revealed that my Java version was out of date as well as my version of Photoshop. The scan also found vulnerabilities on my computer such as allowing autorun on USB drives or problems with Internet Explorer. In each case, I was given an internet link to a page which described the problem and the fixes. In my opinion, this is a very important part of the scan since vulnerabilities in Java or Flash, for example could compromise the security of your computer. I have been impressed by how quickly Kaspersky Internet Security picks up on problems with the software on my machine. Thanks to Kaspersky, I often update my software long before I am asked to do so by the software packages themselves. Overall, the Vulnerabilities scan is a nice feature and my only complaint is that it should be integrated as part of the normal scan of the computer. Also, Norton 360 offers a reputation scan which compares your installed software versus a list of what other Norton users have on their computers to check on the reputation of your software. Therefore, even if your software is current, it is still being check to see if it is suspicious which is a nice feature.

The interface for Kaspersky Internet Security is nice and uncluttered. I found KIS to have a low impact on the computers on which I tested it including a netbook. A scan of my 750 MB hard drive takes several hours which is on par with the time required by Norton 360 and McAfee. As with any software, the system load on your computer using KIS depends very much on your system processor and resources. KIS runs smoothly and without any noticeable impact on my laptop with an Intel Core i7-2720QM processor with 8 GB of RAM, but had a very noticeable impact on my older Centrino Duo processor with 2 GB of RAM. To counter the impact on the older computer, I disabled features such as the Idle Scan and the Rootkit scan as recommended in the Kaspersky forums, but this did not seem to stop the frequent demands on resources by KIS on the older computer. The resource demands are still significantly less than those of McAfee All Access, but Norton 360 demanded less resources.

The updates for KIS are generally smaller than those downloaded by Norton 360 and KIS will allow you to download updates even if you have a slow internet connection. You have the option of allowing KIS to check for updates automatically to manually check for updates. I chose to update manually. KIS gives me warnings if my databases are more than 24 hours out of date. I would have preferred at least a 2 or 3 day lag before I got these warnings and it is as if Kaspersky Internet Security is trying to nag me to choose automatic updates which I find annoying.

One con that I found with the scanning is that by default, KIS does not automatically scan USB drives when they are first plugged into your computer. You have to change the settings to make the scan of USB drives automatic. The only time that I have gotten alerts from my antivirus software about virus or trojans is when I plug into my computer a USB drive that has been given to me by someone else. I firmly believe that a full scan of a USB drive should be the default setting for this reason.

The removal of KIS used to be a chore because you needed to download a program from Kaspersky to remove the software. Unlike previous versions of KIS, I found that KIS 2013 could be uninstalled very easily.

Pros:
- Non invasive on newer, more powerful computers
- Logical interface
- Safe Money
- Vulnerabilities Scan to keep the software installed on your computer up to date
- Smaller update files than Norton 360

Cons:
- Norton 360 rated higher in terms of protection by PC Magazine
- Automatic scans of USB drives not the default setting
- Can have an impact on resources if you are installing on an older computer
- Does not offer a reputation scan of all of the software installed on your computer like Norton 360 does

Overall, I liked KIS better than Norton 360 and McAfee Total Security due to the KIS interface, the Vulnerability Scan, Safe Money and the low impact on my faster computer. However, according to PC Magazine, Norton 360 offers slightly better protection than KIS with less of an effect on your computer's resources and this may be the deciding factor for many people. If Norton 360 offered a Safe Money and a Vulnerability Scan equivalent, then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Norton 360 over KIS. However, the addition of these features makes KIS a good alternative to Norton 360 in my opinion. I strongly recommend trying both to see if you like these features and if not, to choose Norton 360 instead of KIS.
